Pre-launch guide

One product. One comparison chain.

The planned Product Passport keeps every stage of the product record clear, attributable and comparable.

Illustrative only — these records, categories, evidence rules and protection terms are not live or approved yet.

What is a Product Passport?

A Product Passport is the structured, versioned shared reference both parties accept for one deal. It links, without overwriting, the separate Expected, Declared, Received and—if a return is authorized—Returned records used to compare the item.

Five connected records for the same product

Each record keeps its own source. One stage does not silently overwrite another.

  1. Expected

    Buyer requirements

The buyer records the required characteristics, tolerances, condition, accessories and evidence needs.

  2. Declared

    Seller declaration

The seller independently records the actual characteristics, known defects and anything unknown or unable to be verified.

  3. Locked

    Shared Product Passport

After differences are resolved, both parties approve the same accepted version and its linked deal terms.

  4. Received

    Buyer receipt declaration

After delivery, the buyer records what arrived and what could be tested against the locked version.

  5. Returned, if authorized

    Return Product Passport

The authorized return record identifies what must be sent back, its condition, accessories, route and required evidence.

In the planned flow, unresolved critical differences, critical missing information or incomplete required verification would block the payment step. This example does not indicate category availability or coverage.

Evidence supports specific characteristics

Evidence is connected to the field or claim it supports; it is not treated as proof of everything about an item.

Used book

Characteristics
Edition, ISBN, language, completeness and condition.
Possible evidence
An image of the publication-details page could support the edition or ISBN; page and cover images could support condition.
Scope note
The required evidence would depend on an approved category template.

Used phone

Characteristics
Model, storage, IMEI, battery health, locks, defects and accessories.
Possible evidence
A diagnostic screen or approved identifier check could support individual characteristics.
Scope note
A declared value is not automatically a verified value.

Luxury watch

Characteristics
Reference, serial, material, movement, provenance and condition.
Possible evidence
A certificate or expert report could support a specific characteristic.
Scope note
Remote evidence may be insufficient; approved authentication or inspection could be required.

What “locked” means

Locked means the accepted version cannot be changed silently. Any change creates a new version that both parties must approve. It does not mean the record uses blockchain, proves authenticity by itself, or guarantees protection, payment, refund or a dispute outcome.

The same reference at receipt and return

After delivery, the buyer would compare the received item with the locked Product Passport. If a return is authorized, the returned item would also be compared under the approved return conditions. A return label alone would not establish that the correct item was returned.

Before launch

  • These examples explain a planned process; they are not active deal terms.
  • Category availability, value limits, evidence, inspection, delivery, deadlines, exclusions and protection may vary by approved country and deal policy.
  • Evidence can support a review but is not infallible and does not guarantee authenticity or an outcome.
  • Public coverage, providers and policy terms will be published before any live protected deal.
